BABSON COLLEGE MEN WIN THE 86th ANNUAL NEIGA CHAMPIONSHIP
SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY WOMEN WIN THE 5TH ANNUAL WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP.
NIKO GIANELOS WINS HIS 2ND CONSECUTIVE NEIGA MEDALIST TROPHY WITH A TWO-DAY TOTAL OF 143 (1-UNDER)
SUFFOLK’S ISABEL SMITH WINS THE WOMEN’S MEDALIST BY 8 STROKES WITH A TWO-DAY TOTAL OF 170
Brewster, Mass -- Teams from 19 colleges and universities across New England gathered at The Captains Course in Brewster, MA, on Sunday and Monday, October 17-18, 2021 for the 86th Annual Men’s and 5th Annual Women’s New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Ninety-one Division III golfers competed. The NEIGA was pleased to have Cleveland Golf / Srixon return as the ‘Presenting Sponsor”.
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) has been in existence since 1934 and includes member colleges and universities in New England and is considered to be the oldest college golf tournament.
The 9th ranked Babson College Beavers, under the leadership of Head Coach Jeff Page, shot a two-day total of 591 to win the overall championship by 38 strokes over Husson University. Babson had the top 3 finishers in the tournament.
Nicholas Gianelos, the 2019 winner (no tournament in 2020 due to Covid-19), defended his title. His two-day 143 was two strokes better than his win in 2019.
Suffolk University, coached by Jay Parker, defeated Husson University by 10 shots with a two-day total of 777. Isabel Smith, won the Women’s individual title by 8 strokes, shooting a women’s low 82 in the final round.
Cleveland Golf/Srixon sponsored the long drive and closest to the pin competitions giving new Cleveland wedges to the ladies and men’s winners. Winners of the long drive competitions were Jacob Poitras from Worcester State and Ellie Yarborough from Suffolk. Evan Libby of Nichols College and Isabel Smith were the winners of the closest to the pin competitions. A set of wedges were awarded to the medalists.
